Last we chatted I think I was happy with Amazon Instant and Netflix. My wife missed reg tv and Hulu just didn't seem the same so we went back to Directv which is really a great company. Fios TV sucked, we tried them for a while. At any rate. We're back to Directv basic package and we rent via Redbox etc. My wife has all but finished her master's and is in practicum training to be an MFT so in about 2-3 years we can certainly afford to do the Netflix and Hulu stuff. Right now we still have to pinch every penny. Until then, we seriously have seen every movie there is so Netflix or Blockbuster aren't necessary. I just thought it was a trip that you cannot rent a DVD anywhere up here. Amazing times. The regular channels are more appealing to us so we do Directv for now. Hopefully your big name can get me some traffic to this post ;) Thanks man.

Re: Movies I Liked so Much, I Bought Them

yes, the dinner cruise was fantastic, as always on dinner cruises the experience is better than the cuisine. But we are picky about food since my wife is a trained chef and I am spoiled.

For Movies, you do the DVD mailer thing then? Blockbuster Total Access was really good because it doesn't have the 28 day delay Netflix has with new releases, but it loses some benefit when you can't drive down and exchange instantly for replacements.

Do you know that I did away with Dish Network in 2 of my rooms and have no cable or Satellite in CA, I am using Roku XDS boxes with Hulu+, Netflix and Amazon VOD and average about $30 per month for all those services and get access to any content I could possibly watch for a fraction of what I was paying for cable/satellite. The only problem is live TV, you can only get CNN International instead of local for live News, and only JTV and a handful of other channels offer live TV content.

Re: Movies I Liked so Much, I Bought Them

That's awesome man, I get the "won it" idea. I think I have seen Robert Redford's "A River Runs Through it" 100+ times because when I used to be a single man I never took it out of the VHS. I wrote my thesis watching that amazing background of a movie. This post features movies like that. Like you, I have many movies I liked once and that was enough. It doesn't mean they were bad by any means. As an interesting side note, we live about 3 hours south of Vegas in a place known as the "high desert." We officially as of a few months ago have no Blockbuster or any other DVD or VHS rental stores in a driveable distance. We do have Red Box but the selection is very limited. I'm jealous of you over there :) On aNOTHER side note, I read your post about the San Diego dinner cruise and sarah and I decided we are taking a Long Beach one soon. Thanks for that inspirational idea. Was it great?

Re: Movies I Liked so Much, I Bought Them

I am such a movie buff I have a weird sense of ownership pride that takes over, almost like a collector. I have bought movies I have seen and enjoyed and never once watched them on DVD, just like knowing that I won them. The Ghost and the Darkness is one example. Where other movies I have watched maybe 10 times whenever a mood strikes (Tombstone for example) and others I have annual traditions or marathons, like my kids and I watch the LOTR marathon at least 1x per year queued up for an all dayer, and probably will again before the Hobbit releases this December.

This is even with me owning Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Prime for all the video on demand content I can consume, I will go to Blockbuster and buy their 5 for $20 deals and scoop up 5 new movies every once in a while to build my collection. Odd I know, but just one of my habits.

Re: Movies I Liked so Much, I Bought Them

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was amazing, of course. For me, however, it wasn't one I bought. This particular list is for "movies I liked so much I BOUGHT them." Some movies, like Lord of the Rings, I'm ok just seeing once in the theater or wherever. Plus, I think it may be the longest running trilogy on our Satellite box. One of them is literally always on! Having said that, I am planning to make a much longer post that will include all the movies I have reviewed that I enjoyed (ie; 4 to 5/5 stars) through the years. Does that make sense? You know me, I tend to confuse people with my blogging concepts but I'm always improving them (hopefully).

Re: Movies I Liked so Much, I Bought Them

Pretty much anything Pixar :), Dispicable Me was great as well. I haven't seen the movie but I was fascinated by the trailer. Not by the 911 aspect but by the possibility of adventure that the young boy could have been exposed to. I imagined the distraught son swept away by his imagination by interesting strangers into new territory with the ultimate payback of a resolution to his quest. From your review, it appears that my expectations were dashed.

Re: Online Diarist Blog Safari 2-5-12

Thanks for the linkage! :)

Re: Online Diarist Blog Safari 1-18-12

You're welcome Michael.
